Artwork frames is a good place to start because frames come in all kinds of styles, shapes, sizes and prices. Plus, it can be an inexpensive way to spruce up your personal space. Craft stores offer framing services, but you can do it yourself. Whatever you choose, below read five things you need to know about framing artwork.

  • 1.Let the artwork shine. This means to showcase the art itself, not the frame. The eye should be drawn to the art as the centerpiece. Choose a frame that compliments and properly displays the artwork.
  • 2.Use a mat. Using a mat makes the picture or artwork stand out and gives the piece a professional look.
  • 3.Size and proportion are important. The mat should be wider than the frame. The artwork frame will be determined by the size of the piece of art. A general rule is the bigger the artwork, the wider the frame.
  • 4.Consider preservation. It will depend on the actual artwork, its value and importance on how you preserve it. For example, using 100 percent acid-free mat for artwork on paper will prevent discoloring. Acid-free tape is also a preservation measure. Regular glass is less expensive but does not protect art from the sun’s rays. UV filtering glass will.
  • 5.Hanging hardware. Most pre-made frames come with built-in hanging hardware. You may want to reinforce that by adding extra measures to insure it remains on your wall. You decide. D-rings and hanging hardware are recommended for art weighing over ten pounds.
